APPEARANCE; Nate is out of place in the depths of the south, a city-slicker lost among hicks and rednecks, yet oddly at home – the man rarely appears uncomfortable, ever at ease. Reactions to stress are subtle, but exist: tension in hands that cannot keep still, the donning of sunglasses to hide his own eyes. Anything to maintain an air of casualness, of nonchalance, regardless of the truth. The werewolf's clothes are often immaculate, suits and collared shirts and slacks, blue jeans and jackets, a clean-cut figure no matter the dress code. A permanent five o’clock shadow stubbles his cheeks and chin, and his mop of black hair is always elegantly tousled, never quite neat.
He is an active man, and though work and a hectic lifestyle tend to impact this negatively, he still manages to keep in relative shape. Nathan’s wiry, tall frame isn’t immediately intimidating, but there’s something no-nonsense about his stance and demeanor - the natural swagger with which he holds himself - that encourages a second evaluation.
PERSONALITY; Serious, no-nonsense, intelligent and analytical; these are the things Nathan first appears, the things that make him a successful man. He is proficient at the art of control – of his wolf, of the situations around him – but emotional stress may crack this rough hold, a painful change brought about by circumstance. The werewolf despises feeling vulnerable or showing weakness, of feeling reliant or undermined. That he has recently accepted such flaws as part of himself (and even exposed them to others) is a remarkable change of character – though this is a side of Nate only Logan Duvall is privy to.
Keeping circumstances well within hand is all part of his modus operandi – because if he doesn’t, everything tends to fall apart, including himself. A lingering anxiety disorder manifests in this compulsive need for authority.
An almost gentle demeanor undermines cool appearances and a street-worn hardness, a kind-hearted disposition that’s settled deep at his core. He is affable, quiet in conversation but a friendly face where required, and his motivations tend to be honest, clean. Once engaged in informal dialogue, or having broken through the bonds of friendship, Nathan comes across as youthful and exuberant, fond of a good joke or easy laughter – though not quite as easy as it once was, and rarely truly revealing. There is always a shred of hesitance at perceived closeness, a wary eye cast on trust, a hidden belief that nothing can ever be simple.
The sole exception to this is Logan. Within the bounds of their relationship and home, Nathan can relax, speak openly, and feel at ease; with his husband, anxiety and fear do not exist. He is fiercely protective of the man, and puts him before anything else. In comparison, the front he presents to the world is an empty and hollow thing, a hardness learned through loss and trial by fire designed to maintain distance. The werewolf is more cautious than ever of letting any vulnerability show.
HISTORY; Nathaniel Hart lived an uninspired childhood in Chicago, and he has spent the majority of his life making up for that fact. Born poor and all too often ignored, he was quick to dabble in an underworld of crime, violence, and drugs; by the time he hit is mid-teens, Nate already had a juvenile record and a developed knack for slipping through the cracks. It was in a deal gone wrong that he ended up mauled, and his street-hardened talent for tenacious and stubborn survival would see him through yet again.
His new wolf's nature and his inborn talents slowly revealed themselves as the pack he was folded into attempted to find him employment and stability. Nathan found a job first as a bouncer, then then in protection-based work for the pack's low level assets. He excelled, and it gave him an opportunity to learn to control his wolf. In contrast, his lust for control and power found an outlet in indulging vice and greed. Nathan succumbed to a life of decadence and indulgence, seeking pleasure in drugs and sex to make up for emotions his childhood had lacked.
An eventual pack-related transfer to Las Vegas did not curb these instincts, though he settled down briefly when he engaged in a five-year on-again, off-again relationship, a childish thing forged in infidelity and vice. At the age of 30, a werewolf power struggle in the city saw his partner killed, his pack absorbed, his job and rank stripped from him - and though Nathan thought himself capable, he found himself broken. He sought therapy; failed at it. Months later, he fled the city entirely.
Hardly two days into his journey to nowhere would he encounter Logan Duvall, hitchhiking on the side of an Arizona interstate (like an idiot). The two hit it off, however awkwardly, and Nathan found himself smiling - opening up - for the first time since the accident. A series of mistakes and misunderstandings - of wrong place, wrong time, too soon - saw them separated, though they would meet again a year later in Blackwater, Tennessee.
The time between Nathan spent traveling, unsettled and unhappy, seeing the sights of the southwest United States and descending into a routine of alcohol and antidepressants. His pack instinct kicked in when his wolf, previously subdued, began to wake; this coincided with his arrival in Blackwater, and Nathan put down roots. He settled into the pack; bought a house, started a business. Pretended to live a life.
Then Logan showed up.
The start of their relationship was rocky, if in the end, it only served to make them stronger. Logan shot Nate's wolf, Nate got drugged by a rogue hunter looking for information, they hooked up in a shower - pretty par for the course for Nathan and Logan. Easy and lazy days were nearly shattered when Logan left for a hunt and disappeared; Nate, a pessimist used to fearing the worst, fell back on old habits to cope. When Logan returned - as a wolf and clearly not dead - their relationship solidified, forged in the flames. Nate gave up drinking at Logan's asking; Logan moved in.
Following an attack on the pack by a hunter, Nathan was left recovering from injuries and simultaneously managing the majority of pack affairs; disgruntled, it afforded him an opportunity to reevaluate important things in his life. In December, he and Logan got engaged, and slowly began the process of ostracizing themselves from the rest of Blackwater. Removing themselves from politics would not spare them in the end; come January, the pair were attacked in their own home by a rival pack, and though they were successful in defending their territory, their arrangement with Blackwater and its inept leadership had come to an end.
They left, together, and escaped to New York to make good on promises - they got married. Their return to Tennessee was only long enough to see them moved out and into a new house, one forged in peace and solidarity away from the chaos of the world. Nate suspects he might be a recluse; with Logan at his side, he's pretty sure he doesn't care.
